Eni says it and partner BP will next month spud an initial exploration well on their two large exploration blocks in the Ghadames basin of western Libya and will kick off drilling on a giant offshore block late next year.

Speaking at a 23 September roundtable in Rome organized by the Libya Energy & Economic Summit, Eni North Africa head Martina Opizzi says that Eni (42.5%op) and BP (42.5%) are set to kick off exploration drilling next month on their two giant Ghadames Basin blocks – ‘Area A’ and ‘Area B’. Ms Opizzi says that the initial drilling will be close to existing Eni-operated infrastructure. This implies a focus on the western portion of Area B which adjoins the Wafa gas/condensate field of Eni-led Mellitah Oil & Gas (see map), with the likely development option for any discovery being a tie-back to Wafa and on to the Eni-operated Mellitah processing facilities on the coast west of Tripoli.
