Abu Dhabi’s Adnoc announced on 17 January that work has now been completed on laying 1,000km of high voltage direct current (HVDC) cables connecting key offshore facilities to the emirate’s grid. The $3.8bn offshore electrification project (Project Lightning) is intended to reduce offshore emissions by up to 50% through replacing existing offshore gas turbine generators.

The project is being led by Adnoc and Taqa Transmission (formerly Transco). It entails laying two HVDC connections with combined capacity of 3.2GW. The first route connects Mirfa with Al Ghallan Island in the Zakum oilfield, while the second links Shuweihat with Das Island (see map), from where the Das crude export grade is exported. Das Island also hosts Adnoc’s 5.6mn t/y LNG export terminal. (CONTINUED - 382 WORDS)
