Selami İncedalcı, the general director of Petroleum Affairs at the Turkish Ministry of Energy, has played down exaggerated reports about Turkey’s potential reserves of shale gas. This comes in the wake of US Geological Survey’s 2011 estimate that the country may have 425 trillion cubic feet of unconventional shale gas. Several local experts have stoked the ongoing public debate with even higher reserves estimates.
Mr Incedalci told the daily Zaman in January that “the key geological parameters of these sources [shale gas] are not determined clearly and need to be analyzed thoroughly” and that the estimates of Turkey’s unconventional reserves currently doing the rounds are “volumetric guesstimates and have a degree of reliability of 25% at best.” (CONTINUED - 744 WORDS)
