The Ruler of Ras al-Khaimah Shaikh Sa’ud bin Saqr al-Qasimi issued decree No 4 of 2013 on 14 March to establish the emirate’s own power and water agency, the Ras al-Khaimah Electricity and Water Authority (RAKEWA). Emirates News Agency (WAM) announced that “the new government entity shall enjoy financial, administrative and legal autonomy and juridical personality.” The authority will have three-five directors, appointed by Shaikh Sa’ud. No date was given for RAKEWA to begin operating.
RAKEWA will regulate the ownership, management, operation and maintenance of power generation and water desalination plants, as well as electricity and water distribution networks. The authority is also charged with ensuring that current and future demand for power and water is met “through sustainable planning and development” and to ensure fairness and transparency of pricing for customers.
