Egypt has invited Russia to participate in building a nuclear power plant and exploiting Egyptian uranium deposits. During a visit to Moscow by Egypt’s President Muhammad Mursi, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak told reporters Egypt “has come up with a proposal for [Russian state firm] Rosatom to resume cooperation on Egypt’s peaceful nuclear development program and on the construction of nuclear power generation facilities.” He said Egypt also invited Russia to jointly develop its uranium deposits.
Mr Novak said Egypt plans to develop 4gw of nuclear capacity by 2025. Following the visit, Egypt’s Minister of Trade and Industry Hatim Salih said: “We agreed that the Russians will help us conduct studies for the Dab’a nuclear plant and to develop an experimental reactor in Anshas.” The announcement revives a 2007 plan, postponed by the interim government following the February 2011 revolution.
