The 11 May car bombings which killed 50 in the Turkish border town of Reyhanli have raised concerns in Turkey and regionally that Syria’s civil war may be about to spill over – to a far greater extent than it has already – into neighboring states.
Turkish police arrested nine people in connection with the attacks, which Turkish officials immediately blamed on Syria, warning of possible ethnic conflicts. Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said “we should be careful about ethnic provocations in Turkey and Lebanon after the Banias massacre,” referring to an alleged massacre of Sunni families by government forces in the Syrian coastal city a fortnight ago.
