Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) on 26 August said an 80,000 b/d crude distillation unit (CDU) at the Mina ‘Abd Allah refinery will be shut down for about three more weeks for repairs, following a fire on 21 August. The CDU is one of two at the refinery, which has a total throughput capacity of 270,000 b/d. A 40,000 b/d kerosene hydrotreater was also briefly shut down.
In a statement to state-run Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on 21 August, KNPC public relations head Muhammad al-‘Ajmi attributed the fire to a leak in a crude oil pipeline. He said the refinery’s firefighters contained the fire and extinguished it, and that there were no casualties. He added that neither crude shipments to the plant nor product exports were halted.
