The arrival of US Vice President Joe Biden in Cyprus on 21 May was the first indication that Cyprus’ recently discovered natural gas reserves could encourage the international community to once again push for a solution to the 40-year division of the island. The Vice President’s visit also appears to have paved the way for more high-profile visitors – most notably US Secretary of State John Kerry, who is scheduled to visit the island in the coming months, though a date is yet to be set.
“Cyprus is poised to become a key player in the Eastern Mediterranean, transforming it into a new global hub for natural gas and markets,” Mr Biden said at a dinner hosted by President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades in Nicosia. “You are uniquely situated at a critical time in modern history.” (CONTINUED - 1138 WORDS)
