Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has issued a request for qualification (RFQ) for building 2.6GW of gas-fired power generation capacity for the Main Interconnected System (MIS) network. This will “most likely be located across two sites” and be developed by private firms under independent power producer (IPP) agreements. The deadline for RFQ submissions is 3 August.
OPWP says that, out of the 2.6GW of capacity sought, 740MW is to be operational for summer 2017 and the remaining 1.86GW for summer 2018. OPWP’s current seven-year plan says that “following an extensive site assessment study and consultation with key stakeholders, sites are being considered at Ibri, Sohar and As Suwayq.” The company aims to award a build-own-operate contract in early 2015.
