Tightening maritime emissions controls are stirring debate about using LNG as a bunker fuel instead of fuel oil, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says. Tighter international rules on sulfur emissions will “have an impact for all players in the oil, gas and shipping industry: oil refiners, gas companies, LNG suppliers, ship owners and ports.”
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been progressively tightening up its Marpol maritime pollution regulations to reduce permissible sulfur content in marine fuels. Emission control areas (ECAs) have been set up in Europe and the US and are being considered in Australia, Japan, Korea, China’s Pearl River, the Mediterranean and Dubai. (CONTINUED - 273 WORDS)
