The beheading this week of a French tourist in Algeria is yet another indication of the growing appeal of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) to Sunni Islamist radicals. Al-Qa’ida and IS are trademarks competing for Jihadist turf as the civil war in Syria continues to galvanize radicals across the region.
While al-Qa’ida and IS compete for the ‘rights’ to the banner of global Jihad, US President Barack Obama delivered strong words at the UN in New York this week following US-led strikes in Syria: “No God condones this terror. No grievance justifies these actions. There can be no reasoning – no negotiation – with this brand of evil. The only language understood by killers like this is the language of force.
