The UAE is leading Gulf region efforts to improve electrical sector efficiency, as it faces a potential shortfall between generating capacity and demand, if recent consumption growth patterns continue. With UAE per capita energy consumption among the highest in the world, the emirates’ Ministry of Energy has set a target of improving energy efficiency by 30% by 2030 (MEES, 26 September 2014).
Abu Dhabi-based Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and US electrical engineering giant GE have produced a white paper showing how the UAE can achieve a “transformational shift” in energy efficiency. While savings can be made in the electricity generation and supply system, the report concludes that “the highest savings to be reaped are in electricity end-use.” (CONTINUED - 547 WORDS)
