Saudi polyolefins manufacturer Yansab has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to Korea’s eTEC E&C for an 80,000 tons/year ethylene glycol plant to be built at its complex in Yanbu on the Red Sea coast. The plant is scheduled for start-up by the end of 2018, when it will increase Yansab’s ethylene glycol capacity by just over 10%.
Yansab operates an ethane cracker with capacity to produce 1.3mn t/y of ethylene and 400,000 t/y of propylene. These are used as feedstock for downstream units with combined capacity to produce 770,000 t/y of ethylene glycol – used to make polyester fiber and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging – as well as 800,000 t/y of polyethylene and 400,000 t/y of polypropylene.
