Oman government is moving to subsume the Public Authority for Electricity and Water, which oversees Oman’s Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), within the Ministry of Oil & Gas.
The shake-up of the Sultanate’s state energy sector is part of its National Program for Enhancing Economic Diversification (Tanfeedh). “A critical recommendation of Tanfeedh is to bring all aspects of energy under one umbrella,” Ministry of Oil & Gas undersecretary Salim al-Aufi says. However, the merger is unlikely to be completed soon as there are “still challenges in implementing this and lots of other details regarding supervision, asset allocations and financial matters related to governance,” he adds.
