The completion of three 4.8GW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants by Siemens and local contractors Orascom and Elsewedy has provided a massive boost to Egypt’s power generating capacity.
MEES calculations suggest that, assuming a 10% decline in available conventional capacity since state generator EEHC’s last official capacity estimate for mid-2016, plus additional renewables capacity, the three new plants take Egypt’s installed generating capacity close to 50GW (see table).
