Qatar Petroleum has launched its renewed petrochemicals push, announcing on 24 June that it will partner with US JV Chevron Phillips Chemical in constructing a 1.9mn t/y ethane cracker. This is a considerable expansion from the original project scope of 1.6mn t/y floated in 2017.
The project also entails construction of two high-density polyethylene (HDPE) derivative units, which will receive ethylene feedstock from the cracker. The new complex (QP 70%, Chevron Phillips 30%) will be located in Qatar’s main hydrocarbons hub in Ras Laffan, with startup slated for late 2025. At the north of the Qatari peninsula, Ras Laffan is the site of key gas processing and LNG liquefaction facilities. (CONTINUED - 1100 WORDS)
