In his first public engagement since being appointed energy minister the previous day (MEES, 13 September), Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman told the World Energy Congress in Abu Dhabi on 9 September that the country is “proceeding cautiously” with its plans to develop nuclear energy.
The country has tentative plans to build two nuclear reactors totalling 2.8GW by 2030. Sites have been earmarked at Umm Huwayd and Khor Duweihin on the Gulf coast (MEES, 19 April) but discussions with potential partner firms remain ongoing. MEES soundings indicate that companies in the frame include Chinese state nuclear firm CNNC and France’s EdF. (CONTINUED - 523 WORDS)
