Kuwait’s parliament held a special session on 9 January, where one of the topics discussed was the recently signed agreement with Saudi Arabia to restart production from the Partitioned Neutral Zone (PNZ: MEES, 3 January). Oil Minister Khaled al-Fadhel told parliament that Kuwait’s share of production will reach 250,000 b/d before the end of the year – implying 500,000 b/d overall output.
Meanwhile Foreign Minister Ahmed Nasser Al Sabah reassured MPs that there were no hidden clauses in the agreement, which also firmed up the neighbors’ boundaries. While the PNZ’s resources are split 50:50, the foreign minister reaffirmed that Kuwait’s sovereignty over its half of the zone is absolute – as is Saudi Arabia’s over its portion.
