In recent years the lustre of gas as the ‘greenest’ hydrocarbon has grown exponentially. Initially gas was anointed as the “transition fuel,” but industry figures more recently crowned it a “destination fuel” due to its lower emissions and its reliability as a baseload fuel for power generation.
Unsurprisingly, IOCs have been keen to flag up the green credentials of gas, with the likes of BP, Total, Shell and Eni all planning to boost the role of the fuel in their portfolios. That said, IOCs have acknowledged the limitations of gas, with Total CEO Patrick Pouyanné last year saying “the ‘but’ is methane emissions.
