Qatar’s state electricity generator and desalinator QEWC has set records for both power generation and water production this year, with monthly powergen hitting a new peak of 5.83TWh in July and desalination setting monthly records throughout the year to date including a peak of 63.6mn m3 in August.
All the GCC states are likely to have set new electricity demand records this summer as pandemic-induced travel restrictions prevented residents from flying to cooler climates. Qatar is no exception as highlighted by the surge in July. Although electricity consumption dropped slightly in August, at 5.74TWh it was still the second highest figure on record (see chart 1).
