Abu Dhabi plans to generate one third of its energy from “clean” sources within four years says Department of Energy Chairman Awaidha Murshed al-Marar. The emirate is making big strides towards achieving its goal, with the start of nuclear power generation in August the most prominent example (MEES, 14 August).
“The activation of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant signals the start of a new era of clean energy in Abu Dhabi and the UAE,” he says. Barakah Unit 1 has capacity to generate 1.4GW and is this first of four units at the nuclear plant to come online. MEES estimates that Barakah could reach full 5.6GW capacity by the end of 2024, in time to meet Mr Marar’s clean energy target. (CONTINUED - 325 WORDS)
