Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman says that the kingdom aims for renewable energy to account for 50% of its power generation capacity by 2030. Speaking on a 25 June webinar hosted by the kingdom’s Future Investment Initiative, the minister says Saudi Arabia is “trying to lead by example” in decarbonizing its power sector, which he says “will be the most efficient power sector in the world.”
The kingdom has a long way to go to achieve these laudable aims. Until 2016, liquids accounted for more than 50% of power generation. Natural gas now accounts for more than 50% thanks to a considerable increase in processing capacity in recent years (MEES, 26 June). Momentum is also growing in the renewables sector.
