The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) will soon award two solar power projects with a combined 1GW capacity according to the Oman News Agency (ONA). OPWP is readying to select international developers for the 500MW Manah 1 and 500MW Manah 2 solar plants. The plants are planned to begin commercial operations in 4Q 2024.
Solar power projects have been slow to get off the ground in Oman, but the Sultanate intends for renewables to contribute 20% of electricity generation by 2030. The 500MW Ibri-2 solar PV plant was developed by a consortium of Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power (50%), Gulf Investment Corporation (40%) and Alternative Energy Projects Co (10%) under a build own operate (BOO) model and started up in August.
