Libya NOC board member Abulgasem Shengher was arrested and subsequently detained over corruption allegations on 30 October adding to perceptions that the noose is tightening around chairman Mustafa Sanalla.
After ruling supreme over the oil sector for several years, the appointment of an oil minister this year, as well as a more proactive prime minister, has put a check on Mr Sanalla’s power. In an attempt to assert his authority over NOC, oil minister Mohammed Aoun has (unsuccessfully) attempted to replace Mr Sanalla, and ordered his suspension twice, but this is being ignored (MEES, 22 October).
