The energy ministers of Israel, Cyprus and Greece got together in Nicosia on 9 March to sign an MoU to cooperate on the construction of a planned world-beating power line to connect their three countries.
The 1,208km high voltage direct current (HVDC) EuroAsia Interconnector would link the grids of the three countries with up to 500 kilovolts of power and 2GW capacity. The project is nothing if not ambitious: it would be the world’s longest deepwater subsea interconnector, traversing seabed depths of up to 3,000 meters and has been costed at €2.5bn ($3.0bn).
