Turkey is a key Mediterranean gas importer and a swing customer between piped supplies from Russia to the north, Azerbaijan and Iran to the east, and of LNG for which Algeria and Qatar have long been the key suppliers.
Turkey’s gas imports rose 6% to 47.95bcm for 2020 despite a Covid-induced 5% contraction in the country’s GDP but the 2020 figure remains 13% below 2018’s all-time high 55.25bcm (see chart and table). And this figure may well never be topped. With 99% of Turkey’s gas consumption imported, a key aim of Turkey’s energy security policy has been to reduce the country’s reliance on gas in general and on imported gas in particular.
