Swedish independent Tethys Oil is carving a significant role for itself in Oman’s upstream. It is confident that with nearly 15 years’ experience in the country it can convert exploration acreage into productive assets. As a junior partner at Oman’s Blocks 3&4 since 2007, Tethys has been quietly building expertise in the sultanate’s geology, gaining the confidence to go it alone as operator elsewhere in the country.
Although Oman’s oil output is modest in comparison to neighboring Saudi Arabia and the UAE, at 950,000 b/d over the first four months of 2021 (output was 1mn+ b/d before Opec+ cuts), the country is still a sizeable producer. Before Qatar quit Opec effective 1 January 2019 (MEES, 7 December 2018), Oman was commonly known as the largest non-Opec oil producer in the Middle East. (CONTINUED - 1876 WORDS)
