Iran’s new president Ebrahim Raisi on 29 August appointed military industry veteran Mohammad Eslami as vice president and chief of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) in a move that marks the beginning of a reorganization in the Iranian nuclear negotiations strategy.
Mr Eslami, a civil engineer by education, replaces nuclear scientist Ali Akbar Salehi who had served at the post since 2013. Born in Iraq’s Karbala province, fluent Arabic speaker Mr Salehi was often considered an outsider and the fact that he is an alumnus of the US’ prestigious MIT university may have marked him out as suspect in some quarters.
