As of 1 January, London-listed Genel became operator of the Sarta field in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq under the terms of its purchase of a 30% stake from Chevron in early 2019 (MEES, 25 January 2019). Chevron retains its 50% stake at the field, which produced 6,400 b/d in 2021. The KRG has 20%.
The partners continue to appraise Sarta, while producing through a 20,000 b/d early production facility (EPF). Sarta-1D was drilled and completed in November, with the rig now drilling a workover at Sarta-4. A second rig completed the Sarta-5 well in late 2021 and will start Sarta-6 in the coming weeks. These wells “are designed to appraise the field away from the pilot production facility and will be key in resolving the current uncertainty over the size and shape of the Sarta field,” Genel says.
