Adnoc announced on 20 October that a new well at its Upper Zakum concession “will tap into an undeveloped part of the giant Upper Zakum reservoir with the potential to increase the field’s production capacity by 15,000 barrels of oil per day, without the need to expand or build any new infrastructure.”
The Abu Dhabi state firm says the well sets a new world record for the longest oil and gas well, stretching 50,000 feet. It was drilled from the Umm al Anbar artificial island. The Upper Zakum concession is operated by Adnoc (60%), ExxonMobil (28%), and Inpex (12%). Exxon said earlier this year that the concession has “demonstrated 1mn b/d production capacity” and that work is underway “to sustain 1mn b/d production plateau.” The partners are now assessing ways to increase capacity beyond 1mn b/d.
