Regional power connections have become the talk of the town in recent months with Saudi Arabia and Egypt moving forward with interconnection plans while Cyprus, Israel, Egypt and Greece are at varying stages of linking their grids through numerous projects.Iraq too is also looking to connect to other regional power grids (MEES, 28 October).
On 28 September, Standard Chartered Bank, along with Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, announced they were providing a $566.4mn loan to the Saudi Electricity Company to help support the construction of the 3GW, $1.8bn Saudi-Egypt electricity interconnection project.
