No doubt with Europe’s scramble for gas in mind, Libyan oil and gas officials have in recent weeks touted the country’s great gas potential.
Oil & Gas Minister Mohammed Aoun in October noted that the Libya-to-Italy 8bcm/y (775mn cfd) Greenstream pipeline’s capacity could be doubled within “four-to-six months.” National Oil Corporation (NOC) head Farhat Bengdara has meanwhile floated the idea of a gas pipeline connecting Libya to Egypt and Greece, though, even if Libya had the spare gas (it doesn’t) this looks a geopolitically-motivated fantasy riposte to the Tripoli-based government’s signing of an offshore exploration deal with Turkey (MEES, 7 October).
