Dubai’s decision last week to convert its Hassyan coal power plant to gas removes an embarrassing contradiction from the UAE’s domestic energy policy.
For years the UAE has been promoting clean electricity domestically, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi bringing large-scale solar plants online, and the latter adding nuclear. In developing a 2.4GW coal plant as Hassyan, Dubai was undoubtedly undermining the UAE’s messaging on this front (MEES, 28 August 2020). And this contradiction was set to be on full display to the world next year, when the UAE will be hosting the Cop 28 climate talks (MEES, 4 February). (CONTINUED - 743 WORDS)
