Fighting between Houthi rebels and government forces around the Marib basin are seen as the key threat to Yemen’s shaky oil revival. But protests further east in Hadramout have knocked a large chunk of national production offline.
Canadian minnow Calvalley Petroleum announced on 30 January that is has suspended operations at Yemen’s Block 9 due to local unrest. This follows its issuing on 17 January of an operations suspension notice to contractors and staff mentioning “production and transportation disruption” at the company’s “gate and roadblocks.” According to a 25 January letter from the Hadramout authorities, locals had blocked roads to demand an end to power outages, unpaid wages and the province’s share of oil revenues.
