Algeria has suspended a 20-year-old “treaty of friendship” with Spain over Madrid’s April decision to back Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. Algiers fiercely opposes Rabat’s claim over the territory and instead supports the Sahrawi independence movement, the Polisario Front, which is seeking an independent state.
Algeria said Spain had given its “full support to the illegal and illegitimate formula of internal autonomy advocated by the occupying power,” in an 8 June statement. Algeria has also moved to ban most trade with Spain. (CONTINUED - 317 WORDS)
