Libya has lost 600MW of production from two key power plants located in the country’s eastern region due to a lack of gas supplies, according to a 31 May statement from state power firm Gecol.
The loss of power capacity is a direct result of the country’s inability to export oil from the ports of Brega and Zueitina. These have been blockaded, alongside two key fields in the southwest, by eastern-based General Khalifa Haftar since mid-April in a bid to put pressure on the Tripoli-based government he wants replaced (MEES, 22 April).
