Latest Jodi data for August highlights the problems Egypt was faced with during the summer, importing fuel oil to supplement a shortage of gas, which was ultimately unable to prevent crippling power cuts which worsened in September (MEES, 15 September).
July’s 6.837bn cfd gas consumption was a record and August likely would have seen that record broken had it not been for Egypt’s falling gas output, which slipped to a three year low 5.8bn cfd (MEES, 13 October), whilst imports from Israel fell to 746mn cfd, the lowest this year. As such the country suffered an acute gas shortfall and widespread power cuts. Despite a halt to LNG exports, gas consumption slumped 420mn cfd month-on-month to 6.417bn cfd for August.
