Officials at last week’s inauguration of the 2GW Al Dhafra solar PV plant ensured that no observer could miss the symbolism of the event taking place just two weeks before the UAE hosts the Cop28 climate talks (MEES, 17 November). The decision to host the talks in the world’s seventh largest oil producer was a contentious one, but the UAE is keen to demonstrate its commitment to clean energy.
Speaking during the 16 November inauguration, The Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said that “As the UAE prepares to host Cop28, this pioneering project reflects the country’s ongoing commitment to raising its share of clean energy, reducing its carbon emissions and supporting the global efforts on climate action.” (CONTINUED - 879 WORDS)
