Saudi Arabia is pioneering global green hydrogen development through its $8.4bn project at Neom in the kingdom’s far north-west. The facility is being developed by the Neom Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC), which groups Saudi private sector firm Acwa Power, US firm Air Products and the Neom subsidiary of sovereign wealth fund PIF. Once fully operational it will produce 1.2mn t/y of green ammonia from 237,000 t/y of green hydrogen.
NGHC aims to have the facility operational in 2026, and financial close was achieved in June this year (MEES, 9 June). A plethora of ambitious green hydrogen projects have been unveiled globally in recent years, many considerably larger than NGHC (MEES, 8 December), but this project is by far the largest to have yet achieved a final investment decision (FID).
