While the oil and gas majors get much of the attention offshore Egypt (MEES, 10 February), Egyptian independent Cheiron is one of the few firms that is moving forward with concrete steps to bring production online. On 22 January it announced that it had sanctioned development of shallow water gas reserves on the West El Burullus (WEB) development lease 15km offshore and 65km northeast of Alexandria (see map, MEES, 10 February).
The project consists of two gas fields, WEB and Papyrus, discovered by then-operator Gaz de France (now Engie) in 2008 and 2010 respectively “and will involve the installation of two new platforms and the drilling of six wells and the recompletion of one existing well,” Cheiron says.
