Libya’s NOC and Italy’s Eni on 28 January signed a deal for the long-stalled $8bn development of 6tcf gas reserves on ‘Structures A&E’ on contractual Area D offshore Tripoli.
The deal, which Eni refers to as “the first major project in the country since the early 2000s” was signed by Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi and NOC Chairman Farhat Bengdara in the presence of Libyan PM Abdelhamid Dbeibeh and Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni. Ms Meloni was freshly-arrived from Algeria (MEES, 3 February) on the second leg of a tour intended to cement Italian ties, especially energy-related ties, with Africa under the banner of the ‘Mattei Plan’, named after the founder of Eni.
