Kuwait has started operations at the second unit of the 615,000 b/d Al Zour refinery, and aims to bring the third and final unit online in Q2. The first 205,000 b/d unit began commercial operations in November (MEES, 11 November 2022), and the CEO of state-operator Kipic, Waleed al-Badr, announced on 7 March the facility’s capacity now stands at 410,000 b/d.
In reality, capacity is currently somewhat lower, with operations at the second unit set to be gradually ramped up over the coming weeks. Once fully operational, Al Zour will have nameplate capacity of 615,000 b/d, although Mr Badr says capacity will be a reduced 535,000 b/d if the refinery runs on heavy crude feedstock.
