Oman is accelerating its commitment to clean energy development alongside its 1mn b/d crude oil and condensate production. Having concluded the region’s first ever green hydrogen licensing round earlier this month, in which three blocks were awarded (MEES, 9 June), Oman is also targeting 3.8GW of clean power capacity (primarily renewables) by 2028.
The 2022 annual report from state offtaker Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) shows that the sultanate aims to increase clean power capacity from 550MW currently to 3.8GW by 2028. This 3.25GW addition will entail a steady stream of new project startups from 2Q 2025: an additional 2.5GW of solar PV capacity, 600MW of wind capacity and a 150MW waste-to-energy facility.
