Kuwait’s government has renewed its target for 15% of its generation to come from renewables by 2030. If anything, the move shines a light on just how little progress Kuwait has made on bringing renewable power capacity into its supply mix, at a time when progress is accelerating in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Oman.
The goal, which came as part of the cabinet’s 2023-27 program submitted to parliament (MEES, 28 July), carries little detail. Currently, Kuwait has just 70MW of renewables installed at the Shagaya complex 100km west of Kuwait City, accounting for 0.3% of installed capacity.
