Amid the backdrop of the ongoing war in Gaza and the escalation of violence in the country’s north with Lebanon, Israel continues to work on stabilizing and growing its upstream. Incoming Energy Minister Eli Cohen, having switched over from the Foreign Minister’s position with Israel Katz (MEES, 5 January), will have little time to acclimatize himself to his new surroundings.
On 14 February government technocrats from the Energy and Finance Ministries amongst others will have the first of several meetings planned for the coming months to discuss the country’s gas export policy. The committee was initially scheduled to meet every five years but more recently met in 2018 and 2021 with the aim of deciding whether to relax or tighten gas export quotas. Last year the Finance Ministry came out publicly against any potential plans to relax export quotas, creating friction with the Energy Ministry (MEES, 7 July 2023). (CONTINUED - 1959 WORDS)
