Sudan says it is suspending its membership of East Africa’s IGAD bloc over the latter’s mediation attempts between the war-torn country’s rival armies.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry, part of the de-facto government led by Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, made the announcement on 20 January after learning that rival Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), was invited to an emergency IGAD summit in Uganda’s capital Kampala two days earlier.
