Iran on 10 November began implementing nationwide rolling power cuts, including in and around Tehran, amid acute shortages of both gas and alternate liquid fuels supply to power plants.

State power firm Tavanir says the introduction of the two-hour daily cuts, scheduled between 9am and 5pm, comes as residential gas consumption has soared, cutting supplies available for power generation. It also links the cuts to the 5 November ban on the use of ‘mazut’, a low-quality heavy fuel oil with high sulfur-content, in power plants in Arak, Isfahan and Karaj with a combined capacity of 4.5GW.
