Saudi Aramco on 18 November announced that it and Chinese state giant Sinopec had broken ground on a giant integrated refining and petrochemical project in the coastal city of Zhangzhou, Fujian province, southeast China.

The ‘Fujian Gulei Phase-2’ project will combine a 16mn t/y (320,000 b/d) refinery with a 1.5mn t/y ethylene unit, 2mn t/y paraxylene and downstream derivatives capacity, and a crude terminal capable of handling tankers of up to 300,000 DWT for a total investment of around $10bn.
