In another blow for Sweden’s Oman-focused Tethys Oil, the firm announced a flop at its wildcat Kunooz-1 well in the Fahd area Block 58 (see map, MEES, 13 December). According to a 12 December update the firm says it “was unable to confirm the presence of hydrocarbons, at the site where it had been targeting more than 120mn barrels of unrisked prospective resources.
The company’s hopes were high for the block in the first half of the year with the announcement of six unconventional oil prospects in the nearby South Lahan area (MEES, 19 April). “A success on Block 58 would of course dwarf anything else we are currently doing,” Tethys CEO Magnus Nordin said at the time.
