In an effort to overcome its disconnected electricity transmission network Oman has been pursuing a project to link up its separate grids. The country’s Main Interconnected Network (MIS) is located in and around Muscat in the north, home to most of Oman’s key urban centers and therefore highest demand.
The ‘Rabt’ project aims to connect this main grid with the Dhofar Power System (DPS) in the country’s south. Already the first phase has installed a series of 400kV grid stations with 670km of high voltage transmission cables connecting the main grid with the nascent industrial hub in Duqm in the center of the country (MEES, 10 November 2023).
